🚨 For the first time, a universal definition of heart attack has been developed jointly by four major cardiovascular societies, including the World Heart Federation!

Here’s how it impacts women 👇

1️⃣ Doctors will use different levels of a blood test to help diagnose heart attacks in women and men. This is because women naturally tend to have lower levels of troponin, a substance released when the heart is damaged.

Using different thresholds could help doctors spot heart attacks in women that might otherwise be missed.

2️⃣ The new definition gives greater priority to heart attacks caused by problems other than a blocked artery. These include a tear or sudden tightening of the heart’s blood vessels, types of heart attack that are more common in women and can sometimes be treated less urgently.

By placing these causes within the most serious class of heart attacks, we aim to support earlier recognition and appropriate care.

A major step forward for women everywhere, and an urgent call to action as heart disease remains the leading cause of death among women worldwide.
